Birding in Sabah-Borneo
We are delighted to once again offer our Sabah tour from 2-11 June 2018. Sabah, a part of Malaysia located in northern Borneo, is one of the world’s top birding locations, yet only less than a day’s travel from Australia. Teeming, complex rainforests fan out from Mount Kinabalu to the lowlands and coast. The wildlife is incomparable, with a host of enticing birds (including 48 endemics) and a charismatic mammal fauna (including Orang-Utan and Pygmy Elephant).
The Sabah tour is a great opportunity to expand your birding experience in Malaysia. Covering the well-known yet from a birding point of view under-explored bird hotspots of Sabah on the large island of Borneo, this tour boasts some of the finest birding in Asia. Home to some of the world’s best rainforest and montane birding destinations, the area contains a wide variety of birds, many of which are endemic to small regions.
Safe, comfortable and reliable, the tour is guided by our expert local bird guide, one of the best in Malaysia, and accompanied by one of our experienced Australian guides: Steve Potter or Peter Waanders, who have birded South-east Asia extensively. They will make sure that the tour runs smoothly and that you won’t need to worry about anything – except enjoying the trip and the birds!
This tour takes us to the montane forests of Mt Kinabalu, across to the lowland forests at the Sepilok Rainforest Centre, up the mighty Kinabatangan River to the huge Gomantong Caves and finally to the spectacular rainforests in the world-renowned Danum Valley Conservation Area, one of the world’s top birding destinations. We’ll stay at comfortable, quality accommodation with delightful meals to suit all taste-buds. During our 2016 and 2017 tours we recorded over 240 species of birds and more than 20 mammal species.
The tour can be taken as a stand-alone, or as an add-on to our Peninsular Malaysia tour (which runs either before or after this tour). A 4% discount applies to the Peninsular Malaysia tour if you wish to book both. Click the buttons below to download the tour brochure containing a detailed itinerary, bird list and booking details.
