Magic of the Mallee Photo Tour – 4 Days

9 October 2020 - 12 October 2020

One of the most unique environments in Australia, the vast “mallee” eucalypt woodlands can be found near the Murray river some 2-3 hours north-east of Adelaide. Many rare and threatened bid species can be found here. You’ll need to make your own way to the town of Berri or nearby for an early departure the next morning. The day is designed to maximise our time out in the field, combining rare and sought-after species with allowing as much time as possible for photography. We will commence the day early, in order to catch the good light for photographing key mallee bird species most shortly after sunrise. Target species can include Red-lored Whistler (difficult), Black-eared Miner, Mulga Parrot, Scarlet-chested Parrot (if present, not every year, usually Sep-Dec), Chestnut Quail-thrush, Shy Heathwren, Southern Scrub-robin, Striated Grasswren (difficult), Gilbert’s Whistler, White-browed Treecreeper, up to 8 species of Honeyeater including Striped, etc. We will spend some time in a hide overlooking a bird bath with chances of honeyeaters and parrots. Depending on circumstances we can also an active Malleefowl mound (if present, usually Oct-Mar). In the afternoon we will focus on the bird-rich wetlands of the Murray river with its many species of waterbirds and chances of Freckled Duck, crakes and rails, Regent Parrot and sometimes Banded Stilt. Join our expert bird guide Helga on this exciting adventure!

The exact layout of the day will be decided in consultation with the client as it will depend on what target species you wish to photograph and where the best bird activity is taking place at the time of your visit. Locations visited can include areas such as Gluepot, Calperum, Murray-Sunset and other habitats in the region.
