Outback South Australia

We’re excited to offer a new 10-day adventure where we will enjoy the birding riches, fascinating mammals, and extraordinary geological relics, of the fabled Australian outback during the mild early spring weather. Co-led by Dr Tonia Cochran of Inala Nature Tours and Peter Waanders of Bellbird Birding Tours, the tour will be joined by Ben McHenry from the South Australian Museum, to provide commentary on the rare geological wonders of the outback, and give us behind-the-scenes access to an nternationally significant fossil site. Highlights include the solitude of the outback where endless salt pans, striking red dunes, gnarly old trees, and vast plains make for scenes of incredible contrast and stark beauty; sought-after bird species like Gibberbird, Thick-billed and Short-tailed Grasswren, Crimson and Orange Chat, Banded and Chestnut-breasted Whiteface, Inland Dotterel, Bourke’s Parrot, Grey Falcon and many more; mammals including Red and Western Grey Kangaroo, Euro Wallaroo, and the beautiful and endangered Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby; a profusion of flowering outback plants (including the rare Sturt’s Desert Pea); and a behind-the-scenes exploration of the fossil imprints of an entire community of soft-bodied creatures, exquisitely preserved and representing a significant snapshot of our geological heritage.
